Facebook Fan Page
January 14, 2010 by Steven Seppinni
My social media expert has been telling me I need to start a facebook fan page. I’ve been reluctant to do this. It seems a bit self-serving to promote oneself and ask for fans. It’s like the joke “enough about me I want to know about you, what do you think of me?”
As you’ll see on the right side bar of this blog I gave in and set up a fan page. To my surprise 200+ people became fans in the first 24 hours. What I found really curious is that most of the 200+ people don’t know me.
It’s similar with twitter. I have 7000+ followers there. Who are these people? Feels like that Verizon commercial with the network following you wherever you go. Don’t get me wrong I understand the power of fans and followers for branding, marketing and communicating. And being involved in Internet marketing and new media I use these tools but I do wonder where this road leads. Will interpersonal communication become dependant on the next new app? Is “just text me” the catch phrase of the 21st century?
I just keep hearing in my head the Laurel and Hardy line, “another fine mess you’ve gotten us into.” Hopefully we still hold meaningful conversations amongst one another, meet for lunch and stay connected to what really matters.
