Are You Smart Enough?
February 10, 2009 by Steven Seppinni
I normally do not read books on the subject of success. Most are boring retreads of basic principles. This past Christmas I was visiting my brother Kevin and while at the bookstore he insisted that I purchase and read Outliars by Malcolm Gladwell (Tipping Point and Blink are authored by him as well). So I did the brotherly thing and purchased the book. To my surprise once I began reading it was hard to put down.
Mr. Gladwell pointed out that success can be related to the time of year you were born, the year in which you were born, the generation you were born into, your ancestors geographic origins and environmental conditions. Now I won’t go into details regarding these points as Mr. Gladwell does an excellent job of this in his book, so I recommend that you to read it.
One point he makes that I would like to discuss is being smart enough. He illustrates that past a certain level of intelligence it really does not matter if your IQ is 120 or 180 in regards to your ability to have massive success in business.
Sometimes we make value judgments of ourselves, “I could never be as successful as that guy/gal because they are super smart.” I’ll bet you that there are plenty of people smarter than Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, and on that do not come close to their level of business success.
So it dawned on me that there are plenty of people just like you that are “smart enough” to be very successful. So when you read Outliers keep this thought in mind and see what possibilities lie in wait for you.
